ABOUT US

Artemis Tax is a small, friendly, approachable tax practice specializing in individual, family, and small business returns. Our mission is to provide shame-free tax help for you, your business, and your family. We strive to uphold anti-bias and anti-racist values in our work. We believe that our progressive ideals and politics play out when we work with all clients, including and especially those from more marginalized backgrounds and those who are non-traditional earners.

We’re Portland’s friendly tax nerds, and we’re a different kind of tax office.

OUR TEAM

Gabrielle Josephson (she/her)

Enrolled Agent, Licensed Tax Consultant #35717-C

When I started to study accounting, I quickly got bored learning about corporate mergers, acquisitions, and profit from a subsidiary’s sale of widgets. I became a Volunteer Tax Preparer at an IRS-funded tax program, and it was there I found the human element in accounting. I dig into tax issues for young adults who are new to filing on their own, growing families with changing tax situations, to those entering or in retirement. Starting a solo business venture, turning your basement apartment into a rental, or wondering what to consider when you rehab an RV and hit the road? Let’s talk.

Other things I’m really into: travel (tell me about your favorite trip, or where you’re headed next!), hanging out with my husband and kids, community building, vegetarian cooking, and debating the merits of Portland’s bagel offerings.

Irena Solomon (she/her)

Enrolled Agent, Licensed Tax Consultant #32698-C

My career in taxes started in 2002 when I discovered at the end of the year that I had business income but I had no idea I had to file a business return. Dealing with that tax return over the next four years—and the resulting bill of thousands of dollars—was my first and most expensive education in taxes. Once that was completely resolved I realized I actually loved taxes and sought to help others who found themselves in the same boat.

These days, when I’m not nerding out about complex tax planning problems, I’m running around after my kids, scouring thrift shops for decorative plates, or looking for places with good nachos.

Talk to me about: S-Corps, Quickbooks, starting a new business when you have no clue about taxes, overthrowing the patriarchy, and your pets.

Elise Blum (she/her)

Office Management Maven, Oregon LTP #P-1922887
Hi There! I’m Elise (she/her). I grew up here in the PNW and am glad to call North Portland my home. I attended Oregon Culinary Institute for restaurant management and had a pretty great go of it in our local food scene. When I found restaurants were no longer serving up the best fit for my work life goals I found my way back to my professional roots in education and office management. I look forward to any opportunity to provide clarity and help others in their understanding.

When I’m not preoccupied with smoothing the cogs in our little corner of the tax universe you can find me out in the woods, or behind the lens of my beloved camera. I absolutely adore cooking and eating, watching b-rate movies with my partner and our two guinea pigs: Harold Houdini and Dr. Peter Venkman, and I am always ready to hear about your favorite recipes or a new page-turner you can’t put down.

Jeanette Hopkins (she/her)

Licensed Tax Preparer #1922353-P

I joined the Artemis team for the 2019 tax season and I enjoy using my  wide-ranging experience in small business and non-profit accounting to assist in providing our clients with accurate tax returns.

Tax preparation is a natural complement to managing the finances of a business.  My experience as an accountant has been focused on small business manufacturing, architect/interior design, rental management, personal injury attorney, non-profit organizations, and athletic auctions.

My passions include another type of puzzle – genealogy. The in-depth search for those elusive facts and documents really hones my ability to see those little details. I also love doing jigsaw and word puzzles, container gardening, fishing, drawing and my kitty Toby. It’s always fun making those pesky numbers behave!

OUR NAMESAKE ARTEMIS

Portrait of the Goddess Artemis

Immediately after her own birth, Artemis—the Greek goddess of the hunt, childbirth, and wilderness—served as a midwife in the birth of her twin brother.  We chose Artemis as our namesake to evoke the spirit of our clients: strong, fierce, self-sovereign explorers who are raising children, cultivating commerce and business, and using their powers for good in search of equilibrium and abundance. It is our privilege to serve you in this life-long mission.
